Every community has its own set of rules that you’re somehow expected to know even if you’re new to the group. Some of them may be obvious and straightforward but others you may not have thought of unless you were told otherwise. So, if you’re new to the hiking community and want to make sure to keep the trails an enjoyable and safe place to explore, here are some of the unspoken rules of hiking etiquette to keep in mind while you’re out and about!
Hiking Etiquette
- Remember right of way: When hiking, if you’re heading down the mountain you should yield to those hiking up. Hikers should also yield to horses and other pack stock. Bicyclists yield to both hikers and stock.
- Let other pass: If you stop to take a break step to the side of the trail (not off) to allow room for others. If while taking a break someone catches up to you, let them continue past so they don’t get stuck behind you on the trail. In large groups try to stick to one side of the trail so others may pass.
- Say hello: when you pass someone on the trail give a friendly greeting or head nod to acknowledge them. It helps to keep a welcoming atmosphere on the trail!
- Be mindful of your noise level: keep your voice low and if you listening to music while you hike keep it at a reasonable volume, remember you are sharing these outdoor spaces with everyone!
- Practice leave no trace (LNT): this includes things like staying on the trail, packing out trash, not feeding the wildlife etc… if you are unfamiliar with the term or need a refresher on some of the rules check out this page here for a more in depth look at leave no trace!
